My “Mummy Makeover”

At the age of 44, mother of two Maria has a body that would make most women half her age envious. Here, she tells of her surgical “Mummy Makeover” by plastic surgeon Dr Steven Merten, of Sydney’s Pure Aesthetics.

I’ve always been fit and healthy, and exercised a great deal. As a result, my body had always been in great shape. I really had never had an issue with it, and was always really happy with my figure.

After having my two beautiful children, I managed to get back to my normal weight pretty quickly, as I jumped straight back into my exercise regime. The trouble was my body just wasn’t responding the way that it used to. I was my normal weight, but it seemed that all the fat had shifted south!

I have a small frame and my breasts had always been nice, neat little breasts. After breastfeeding the children, they went from a perky B cup to nothing but rib cage and skin! I was totally flat, and I didn’t like that at all.

On top of that, my previously well-toned legs had become squishy. I had developed saddlebags and the flesh around my knees was well, just squishy!

I had trouble finding clothes to fit as my waist is tiny, but I had become bottom-heavy. It wasn’t a big issue, but I had always been happy before and I really wanted to do something about it.

I had the full support of my husband, and as he is in the medical profession he helped me research and find a reputable surgeon to perform liposculpture on my saddlebags and knees, and give me a breast augmentation.

I initially saw one doctor, who was very good at what he did, but I just didn’t feel as though he “got me”. He told me I was okay as I was; that I was fine and had nothing to worry about. I felt as though he wasn’t really listening to me and that perhaps he thought I was just being vain and silly.

So then we found Dr Steven Merten, who my husband actually had known from medical school. I immediately liked and felt very comfortable with him. We just chatted normally; he was very professional, but down to earth and matter of fact.

He didn’t try to “upsell” at all. He just understood my problem and told me he could solve it. He promised me realistic results, and he delivered on his promise.

I'm no longer bottom heavy and the results have been maintained after four years. But it also takes exercise!

My liposculpture was performed first, about four years ago. The entire experience was fantastic. The staff were so friendly and professional and very caring. I didn’t once feel self-conscious or embarrassed. The results were immediate.  Of course there was some swelling and bruising, but I could tell straight away that the fat was gone, and to this day it remains gone!

The recovery was fine too. I was a little sore at times and the area did feel numb, but generally it was not a big deal. My skin felt a little loose but soon settled to my body’s new shape. And the results just kept improving over a 12-month period.

I was so pleased that when I decided to have my breasts done two years later. I went back to Dr Merten and, again, the experience was wonderful.

At first, though, after the surgery I woke up and thought, “Oh my God what are these things?”. It’s perfectly natural to feel like that, as there was quite a bit of swelling, and some bruising, so my breasts looked very large, but this soon settled right down. Within a few months I had perfectly normal, lovely breasts again. He gave me teardrop breasts behind the muscle and they look so natural and discreet – not at all fake or overdone.

The procedures were expensive, but they were worth every cent in terms of my happiness – my confidence, my great sex life with my husband (which is something you always worry about after having children) and also shopping for clothes. It’s a breeze now.

I have my cute figure back and I love it. I still exercise but I don’t have to stress and I don’t focus on the things I didn’t like, I just carry on with whatever I am doing. I am back to normal and couldn’t be happier.

My friends always comment on how great my figure is, but I tell them the truth … I tell them that I’ve had help, and of course that I exercise. I don’t want people to think that this shape is attainable without help, because quite often it isn’t. And if having that help makes you feel better about yourself and happier, then I say go for it!
