How Global Keratin Treatment changed my hair

Two years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and following some pretty aggressive chemotherapy I was left with a very unattractive, bald head. My hair grew back thankfully but what came out was a very wiry, brittle alternative to my once long, lustrous locks.
Once I had some length I decided to give the Keratin treatment a try. My trusty hairdresser assured me that my frizz would be transformed into more manageable tresses. Up until now I had been madly blow-drying and straightening my hair after each wash, and it was taking me around an hour to achieve the look I desired.
Global Keratin is not a straightener, rather it relaxes, smoothes and adds shine to the hair. Unlike other chemical processes, Global Keratin does not break down the physical bonds of the hair cuticle; therefore the hair structure is unaffected. The hair simply loses its frizz and becomes more manageable; think a silk layer that has been sealed onto the hair. My therapist called it a “Nancy Ganz” for the hair!
Further benefits include enhanced and prolonged hair colour plus blow drying time is halved.
The process takes around 2 hours all up and involves the following steps:
- The hair is shampooed with a special keratin product and allowed to sit for 10 minutes. This opens the hair cuticle and will allow the keratin to penetrate more effectively.
- After towel trying the hair is parted into sections and Global Keratin is combed through every stand thoroughly, coating each individual hair.
- After 10-15 minutes the hair is blow-dried to remove excess keratin.
- The last step involves ironing the hair straight. This procedure is the most time consuming as each hair is “set” into its position and style.
My hair is looking really smooth now, it feels soft and falls gracefully into place. I’m told to simply rinse the hair after 24 hours and then wash as normal. Applying heat either blow drying or straightening will re-activate the keratin and results will last for up to 4 months, depending on how you look after your hair.
Sulphate and Paraben free products are essential in making the treatment last. Look for a shampoo and conditioner system, like Juvexin, to help look after your hair.
Global Keratin treatment starts from $175 and is available at Shusha Designer Hair, www.shushadesignerhair.com.au, located at 32 Pittwater Rd, Manly, tel: 9977-6701. Shusha means hair in Maltese. It is owned and run by experienced hair stylist, Charmaine Sciortino who will spoil you with her home-baked cookies.
