Tracy Harris is a publishing professional in her 40s. Genetically predisposed to dark circles and with hollows forming under her eyes as part of the natural ageing process, she was depressed to be constantly told she looked tired. After investigating options, she settled on “tear troughing” by cosmetic and laser physician Dr George Calfas, of GMC Cosmedical Clinics in Sydney.

No matter how much I spent on my hair, clothes or makeup I was getting so frustrated when every time I went out I would hear repeatedly “You look sooo tired!”.

As a busy person who is very much in daily contact with others, those comments soon start to irk you – especially if the night before you have slept for more than seven hours. No matter how much magical corrective makeup I applied, the darkness and hollowness under the eye area did give the impression that I was sleep deprived.

I was also aware that due to my olive skin (inherited from my mother) that I had a propensity towards darkness around the eye area that seemed worse when I really was tired or run down.

I investigated a process called “tear troughing”, where the under eye area is treated with a soft, malleable filler, Esthelis, to plump it up, restoring the area to a healthier, more energised look and, in so doing, eliminating the dull signs of signs of ageing tiredness.

After a 20-minute consultation,  in which he clearly outlined the procedure, the method and risks involved, Dr  Calfas started injecting the area where my cheekbone area merged with the softer tissue beneath my eyes.

Looking tired despite plenty of sleep (left) and wide awake now!

The level of pain experienced was a 6 out of 10 on my personal Richter scale – a little more uncomfortable than previous injections undertaken when having Botox or when I had my lips plumped, but nevertheless the sensation was manageable. I did not use Emla (the numbing cream normally offered for these procedures) and I am certain had I done so I wouod have felt less discomfort.

Dr Calfas was meticulous in his procedure, taking time to assess the area and regularly gauged how I was feeling – and of course, to ascertain my own level of expectation.

The entire eye area was completed within 40 minutes and the results were visible immediately. A softening of the area was apparent as well as the reduction in depth under the eye area and the darkened “cavities” were restored to a plumper and more “reste” look. Fine by me!

The area seemed sensitive for the remainder of the day and I was advised not to rub or touch it if possible so that the filler could “assemble” itself naturally .

Slight bruising did occur, but that was made clear to me as a key risk before the procedure began. But in saying that, nothing that a good concealer and daily application of Arnica gel could not fix.

My photos clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of Esthelis as the market leader filler used for such a delicate and sensitive area of the face.
