Test Team review: SK-II Facial Treatment Essence
Posted: Thursday 7 October 2010 08:33am
SK-II’s legendary Facial Treatment Essence, affectionately known as “Miracle Water”, was created in 1980 and has been giving its users a lit-from-within complexion ever since. The secret is the ingredient Pitera, a clear, nutrient-rich liquid that is derived from yeast and has the power to help improve the skin’s surface renewal cycle. It was discovered in a Sake brewery in Japan, when scientists noticed that the workers had incredibly smooth and radiant hands, even though their faces were lined. After years of research, they realised it was because their hands were in constant contact with Pitera.
Now in it’s 30th year, SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is available in a limited edition Anniversary bottle for $245, a 75ml bottle for $100 and a 150ml bottle for $185.
We asked our Younger You Test Team to smooth this “Miracle Water” over their face daily and then report back on the results. Here is the verdict!

My skin is very dry and found the facial Treatment Essence beginning to address that.I as surprised that this has occured in such a short time.My skin has already showed signs of improvement. The Essence is more like water and I was expecting it to have differnt consistency.

Im loving the Sk-II facial treatment. I used it after my shower and put my moisturiser on after and in just 3 days i have noticed that my skin feels tighter and any imperfections on my face seem to be healing quicker. It is like a toner texture and goes on really well. Im definatly a fan and give it 10/10

Simple, elegant packaging but I did find the plastic around the bottlle difficult to remove. The product information was unfortuately in Japanese and I would also have liked information about other products in the range.
Loved the fact that it was not perfumed.
Took a while to get used to the fact that it wasn’t a cream or a lotion and wasn’t sure whether to use it on its own or in conjuction with another moisturiser so just used it on its own for testing purposes. Also difficult to tell whether you are using too much or too little. A bit of trial and error involved.
Really need to use it for longer to judge its effectiveness but do think I have already seen an improvement in skin tone.

The product was unusual and usage was not clearly described. Going by the medicinal smell and the tightness I felt on my skin after using it I used it as a toner.
It did leave my skin feeling tight at first but later I did notice a difference in smoothness. I have oily sensitive skin and feel the need to moisturise in addition to the treatment.
I will continue to use it and gauge the results.
I also found the plastic packaging awkward to open and instructions lacking.

The packaging was really nice, the bottle looks great on my shelf in the bathroom. I’ve been using it for a while now and I’ve noticed improvements – my skin is definitely much softer and some imperfections are much less visible. The only minus is I wasn’t sure how much to use, but otherwise 9/10 for me.

Even on day one my skin felt smooth silky soft, by the second day I was truly addicted kept sneaking down to the bathroom to dap this on my face. It felt like pure luxury on bare skin I even found myself dapping it on over my make up through out the day. It made my make up feel fresh and got rid of the caked up filling. My skin has never looked so clear and plumped up and youthful looking , I found myself sneaking out to the shops without make up which is something I would never have done before. This is a product I’m going to make sure I’m never without.

A big thank you to the Younger You team and to SK-II for giving me an opportunity to test this product. I am a 54 year old female with sensitive skin and the usual wrinkles and age spots that are typical for my vintage so I was really looking forward to discovering what this product could do for my skin.
My first positive impression was that I loved the tamper-proof seal on the 75 ml bottle. If you are paying $100 for a product, you want to be sure no one has pinched a few drops. Similarly, I loved the seal at the neck of the bottle which only allows one drop out at a time. That way there is little risk of spills and no precious drops are wasted. The bottle itself is simple and glass. I prefer shatter-proof packaging so that I can safely keep it in the bathroom but perhaps the ingredients last better in glass.
I was disappointed with the instructions as I don’t read Japanese and the illustrations were not self explanatory. I would hope that as the English speaking market for this product expands that the instructions may become available in English as well. Luckily, the SK-II Australia website did have instructions: “Use twice daily, morning and night. After cleansing, gently pat face and neck using a cotton pad soaked with Facial Treatment Essence. You can even use it on the eye area.” So that’s what I did. More importantly, other than cleansing, I didn’t use any other product during the trial period. There were no instructions on the website about using other moisturisers and it would have been helpful to know this.
The major ingredient in this product is “Pitera” which is derived from the fermentation of a unique yeast extract. This appealed to me, as natural products are less likely to irritate my skin. In fact, the one thing that was missing from the outer box was the long list of artificial, mineral and nano ingredients and additives that adorn the packaging of most modern cosmetics. There were a couple (such as methylparaben) but not a frightening list.
The product itself is liquid and is very refreshing to apply. In fact, it feels the same as any toner. It is scent free. On initial application my face felt sticky and tingly, but both these sensations went quickly. Importantly, this product did not irritate my face at all. The claims made for the product are: lighter skin tone, better moisturisation, firmer skin, better sebum condition. I’ve been using the product for a week now and have not noticed any of those changes. However, I’m not a strong believer in miraculous, non-invasive face treatments. I believe that a tester would need to use at least one full bottle to adequately judge any effect from this. Even the website says that you would need to use the product for 28 days to see any noticeable difference. At this stage, I’m happy to continue using the product and to “wait and see”. I can’t really say whether I would recommend it until I’ve given it a fair chance to work. At $100.00, I wouldn’t recommend it unless there was a noticeable improvement in my skin, but it would be premature to make any decisions about this.

I was only too happy to trial this product. Really pleased with the expensive looking packaging. After using for 5 days and I have noticed a difference in the texture and appearance of my skin. It does feel more supple, not so dry and imperfections seem to be fading. Pity about the instructions being in Japanese as I was not sure how much to apply or if it was a replacement for moisturiser but I used my usual anyway. I’m now a fan of the Facial Treatment Essence aand would give this poduct 9/10 (sorry, one point for the directions in Japanese)!!

I am really glad that younger you provided me the opportunity to try this product. The packaging is very elegant and simple and it can instantly attract anyone. One thing I don’t like about the packaging is that everything is in Japanesse, no instructions are given on how to use it. I have to search over the internet for usage instruction which is not good.
But the actual product is very nice. It does what it promises. I have an oily skin and I was scared of using this product at first instance. But it worked really well on my oily skin and reduced visible pores present on my face. I can even use this essence over my eyes. It provides a really nice illuminating effect and brightens the skin without being harsh on the skin.
Its texture is like a toner and you don’t have to use much of it. So, 75ml bottle can last for long but I think its a bit pricey i.e. $100 for 75ml bottle. It has also got a strange smell like a medicine but you can get used to it with time.
So, finally I can give SK-II Facial Treatment Essence a 4/5.

First off, I would just love to thank the Younger You guys for giving me the opportunity to trial this product, which coincidently is something that’s been on my wish list for years but sadly have never been able to afford it.
The packaging is a beautiful chic red box that is very eye catching. The plastic wrapping around the bottle was extremely difficult to undoand I broke a couple of fingernails in the process. I trialled the 75ml size and it is a very generous amount. The bottle itself looks nice, crisp and fresh. I liked the lid, when I opened it, I could hear a subtle ‘click’, which leads me to think that the lid may have a special feature that keeps the Pitera Water fresh, although this may or may not be true!!
I loved the faint scent of the treatment essence and it feels really cool and refreshing when I pat it into my face, almost like the bottle has been in the fridge.
The texture is watery and absorbs immediately. Usually when I use a product that absorbs so quick, I’m left with a dry, mask-like feeling on my face but this product does not do that. I find I don’t need to use a great deal of the Pitera Water during application, so this size bottle will probably last me a little while.
I’ve been applying the SK-11 Facial Treatment Essence morning and night and I have noticed that my facial skin does look brighter, this is the only change I’ve noticed so far but I believe I will see more changes to my skin the longer I use the essence.
My initial reaction to SK-11 is very positive, I love it. As I said at the beginning, I’ve always wanted to try it but have found the brand too expensive for the initial outlay, especially if by some chance I I did not like it. But now after using the product, I will be making a point of saving specifically to purchase this wonderful ‘miracle water’ as I’m officially HOOKED!! I would recommend this to anyone, any age and any skin concern.

I was very happy to trial Facial Treatment Essence as I had been curious about the product & wondered whether it would live up to the hype & to put it simply yes it does. I love this product & in the relatively short time I have been using it my skin is greatly improved. My skin is extremely dry & quite sensitive but with this product the usual dry, tight feeling has all but disappeared. Application of the essence is a bit tricky as it is a liquid with the consistency of water. The packaging is lovely, very upmarket which is as I’d expect from a product that costs this much. My skin is already looking much better – greatly improved texture, holding moisture better, pores & wrinkles much less apparent, even my acne scarring is looking much, much better which to me makes this product worth it for this benefit alone. I will certainly be purchasing this product & I think it certainly lives up to it’s marketing as ‘miracle water’.

The SK-II came in a nice box and a lovely glass bottle. When i opened the bottle i noticed that it didn’t have a strong smell which i loved because there is nothing worse than a product with an over-powering scent. I then soaked a cotton pad with SK-II and applied to my face and neck. It was like water and i didn’t quite know how much to use but i have since become aware of how to apply it by what i think is suitable for me, trust me you will know for yourself. I have now been using SK-II for two weeks now and i do see improvements such as my face has become clearer and smoother. I loved the feel of this product so much that i chose not to apply anything else on top of it. I loved everything about this product and i would happily purchase and recommend this product to everyone i know. The one thing i didn’t like though was the fact that everything was written in Japenese which made it very hard to read about the product and what it’s purpose was, i had to go to their website just to read about it. Overall SK-II is a great product and i am very happy to be included in this trial, Thankyou so much

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence was a product that I have always wanted to try but was afraid of spending the money just in case I didn’t like it. Boy, have I been missing out! From the first week of using the Essence my skin didnt feel as dehydrated and tight. Originally I was an oily skin type girl, as the years clicked over I’ve notice my cheeks were getting dry but my t-zone still a little oily but not so much. Regardless of what products or serum I used in conjunction with my moisturiser I was still getting the tightness around my cheeks and a little shiny around the nose and forehead, but since trying the SK_II essence it has magically balanced my skin out perfectly. Even blotches and tiny lumps on my skin has smoothed out and I haven’t even used the product for a month yet!
The bottle is easy to handle, the packaging is simple it fits perfectly in my mirror cupboard in the bathroom. There is not much of a fragrance which I love and the application is so easy its a pleasure applying as it feels cool and soothing. This item will definitely be on my permanent beauty shopping list.
There is one tiny downside though, the instructions should be on the bottle not on the box as on the bottle its in japanese.

Absolutely love the SK-II product. After having two children, one six months old and the other 3years, I don’t get that much rest and don’t drink near enough water. So my skin is pretty dehydrated and old looking. After receiving the SK-II I feel like my old self again with lovely soft skin that’s taut and younger looking. The bottle came in a really lovely box but unfortunately the writing was in Japanese. I went on to the website to look at what I was supposed to do with the treatment and use it day and night. I am so pleased to be able to trial this product as I would not have been able to afford it before to just try it. Now I have used it and am very happy with the results, I’ll be going out and buying a new bottle. Thank you.

i Found the SK-II fantastic. Really didnt understand what it was i was supose to do with it to start with but quickly learnt…. The bootle looks great. I liked the way that it hd to stopper to only allow a drop out at at time and you really dont nedd much. The first few time i used it, it felt alittle tingly but I am not used to using new and/or different products on my face. Within a few days i foind the areas that i was using SK-II to be more plump and much softer and smooth. Am very happy with this product and when I read how much it costs I understand why the results were so good and noticeable.. Two thumbs up….. it is great to have the chance to try new things thanks to YoungerYou!

A big thank you to the Younger You team and to SK-II for giving me an opportunity to test this product.
I have always wanted to test the SK-II range but was afraid of spending a lot of money on a product i might not like as i have done in the past.
My skin is very dry & prone to breakouts. In the short time i have noticed that not only does this product hydrate the skin, it actually clears up breakouts & makes my face feel refreshed. It is not like other products i have used in the past which dries out the skin & cause irritation which was great.
As for the packaging, it was easy to open, great that it’s spill proof & great design as well.
Even thou most of the packaging was in Japanese, it was great to see brief instructions at the side of the box in English.
I will continue to use this product & will look into the rest of the SK-II range.

I have been using SKII (miricle water) for over ten years, I am 54yrs old and my skin analysis before and after highlighted a difference o 25% wrinkle reduction. Accorinding to the SKII skin data base I have %95 less wrinkles than other women my age. My goal is 100%. It is a great product. Apply the mask before an important function… you will sincerely notice the difference in the radiance.
