Test Team review: Neutrogena Healthy Defence Daily Moisturiser
Posted: Tuesday 5 October 2010 11:32am
This daily moisturiser contains a broad-spectrum, high SPF sunscreen. It provides the perfect balance of moisturisation and the highest sun protection, thanks to unique Helioplex technology – photostabilised, long-lasting broad-spectrum sun protection.
It’s enriched with skin-nurturing and protecting vitamins A, C and E, and delivers 24-hour moisturisation. Skin is left soft and nourished, and not at all greasy, which makes this the perfect base for make-up, too!
Last week, our Test Team tried Neutrogena Healthy Defence Daily Moisturiser. Here’s what they thought!

The packaging is simple and also informative and probably wouldn’t change a thing in relation to the package, so well done there. The product itself is easy to use and not messy which is good, as for the texture it was smooth and creamy and non greasy which I prefer with all my creams. I did like the product and will of course mention this to family & friends and will continue to use the product and purchase it well after the sample has finished… Well done Neutrogena your products are definitely worth buying. Thank you very much for the opportunity to try and blog on your product.

I was very excited when i recieved this gorgeous parcel in the mail and am thrilled that i was given the chance to trial this wonderful product. I love the fact that the packaging was cute and small enough to carry in my handbag and the smell was pleasant without being too strong and overwhelming like some other creams i have tried. This product is easy to apply and is quickly absorbed, leaving my skin feeling soft and smooth. I haven’t had that long to trial the product but i must say that i am happy with the overall results and i will definately continue to purchase this product and recommend it to all my family and friends. If you want great skin try Nutrogena because i know you too will be happy with the results.

I found this moisturiser to be very silky but not greasy at all. It went on very well and never looked shiny and was great under my makeup. I didn’t have to reapply it during the day, which is great, and that fact it has a high SPF is also great.
I have recommended this to friends and family already because I am impressed with it. Thanks for giving me the chance to trial this.

As with the other testers, there was really no time to get a good accurate indication of this product. I did like the packaging, it looks classy and unlike other products i have used recently the lid is easy to open and the products easily dispersed. I did however find the product a bit of a mixed bag. Maybe its just my skin is usually quite dry. On application it felt nice but as i continued to apply i found it to get greasy and heavy. It has that slight sunscreen feel to it which i found lingered for a couple of hours. By lunch time my t-zone was feeling a little oily with the rest feeling quite dry again. By the end of the day my skin was quite flaky. I have loned some of the product to friends to try. I would probably not purchase this product as i dont like the greasy sunscreen feel.
Thanks for allowing me to try something new.

I was happy to trial this Neutrogena moisturiser. I have quite dry skin and go through heaps of moisturiser. This product was attractively packaged, I like that touch of silver on the pack, without being over-packaged as some are. The tube has a nice feel about it and is a good size to carry in your bag. It’s a soft creamy consistency and once applied I found it was absorbed quickly without leaving leaving any feeling of greasiness. Made foundation even easier to apply and is worthwhile considering as a makeup base that’s part of your beauty routine. Can’t say I noticed much difference in the look of my skin, in the trial period but my skin is feeling softer, thank you!

For the time I used it I found it easy to apply, with a pleasant scent. The moisturiser had a light creamy texture which was absorbed quickly in to my skin without any feeling of greasiness that is commonly associated with moisturisers containing sunscreen. I thought it was a great idea to include a anti tamper seal on the lid. Overall I like this product and will consider purchasing it when I have used my current supply.

I trialled this product and was happy with it. Here are my thoughts.
Promo brochure:
I like that Jennifer Garner is the celebrity rep for this as she is very natural and down-to-earth, fitting in well with the Neutrogena brand.
For consistency, next to the product pictures, I would rewrite ‘Normal / Combination’ to ‘Normal/Combination’ or else change the other to ‘Combination / Oily’. {revise use of spaces}
The product description states that the Combination/Oily moisturiser is 50ml but the packaging and contents are actually 40ml.
Under the product images, you have four points listed. The third point should read ‘vitamins A, C and E’. {revise use of spaces} On the product packaging it actually says ‘vitamins E, A and C’. Not consistent.
In the ‘skin myths uncovered’ section, it might be best for consistency to have a question mark at the end of the last ‘Did you know…’ statement.
A question on Helioplex technology – does it block 100% UVA and UVB and does this have a time limit on protection once applied?
Product packaging:
The writing on the packaging is slightly inconsistent between the Combination/Oily and Normal/Combination products. Some differences are to be expected, eg. ‘super-lightweight’ vs ‘lightweight’ but some statements could be the same, eg. ‘Smooth liberally on face…’ vs ‘Smooth liberally over face…’, ’15 – 20 minutes’ vs ’15-20 minutes’ and ‘…over a serum’ vs ‘…over serum’.
I like the packaging colours, esp. the use of silver.
I’m not a fan of the internal packaging as it makes the product seem larger from the outside of the box then it actually is, as it creates a snug fit for the tubes.
Product tubes:
Normal/Combination – I like the soft feel of the tube and it would be easier to squeeze out the most of the moisturiser, especially since this one is a thicker cream.
Combination/Oily – I prefer the lid on this one as it seems more secure and it was easier to open from the start.
Product texture:
I prefer the fluidity of the Combination/Oily moisturiser as it is lighter, smooths on more easily and is more quickly absorbed. The other is a bit more like sunscreen but still lightweight.
Product fragrance:
Both have a light pleasant smell although I am happy with fragrance free products as they are best with all skin types and sensitivities.
Product performance:
Both performed well. I will definitely continue to use this and prefer the Combination/Oily moisturiser, esp. during summer when faces tend to be oilier and sweat. The Normal/Combination one would be well suited to office environments that are drying to the skin and night-time use.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to trial this product. I would be more than happy to trial any products for you in future and I also enjoy proofreading.

I mainly used the product for normal/combination skin.
A little bit went a long way, and it did not feel greasy at all. Once the product has been absorbed into the skin, it leaves a silky feeling.
I liked the flip top lid it is easy to use (as apposed to the screw top on the oily skin container). The packaging print looks fresh and clean, with a good use of colors.
The light fragrance is nice, it gives you a fresh feeling without being overpowering.
I really enjoyed using this product, and at this price, it is a real steal!

I have been using the Neutrogena Healthy Defence Daily Moisturiser and I am already a convert. I must admit I often neglect to use sunscreen on my face as most of the products I have tried have been too greasy and I hate the way it makes my face appear. Not so with Neutrogena – it went on smoothly, rubbed in within a matter of seconds and didn’t leave my face a big greasy mess. It is long lasting and easily withstood a long sweaty walk in the warm morning sun.
The booklet was very informative and I found the information to be very believable – it’s not trying to be a miracle wrinkle cure – simply a product that should be a must have on every womans beauty regime.
The packaging was very smart. It’s not a big deal to most people, but I love the matte feel of the box with the shiny surfaces. Lovely packaging – great tube and easy to use.
Neutrogena have made it easy to remember the importance of sunscreen with a simple and easy to use daily moisturiser. Thank you.

Packaging was fantastic – I always love packaging the provides plenty of information, not just about the product, but something that teaches you about your own skin functions. The overall look of the product is fairly basic, but is on brand with the standard Neutrogena products and I tend to be a fan of consistency with brand. The internal packaging definitely threw me – I was expecting the product to be a lot bigger (if I hadn’t received it for free to trial I would have been rather disappointed with my purchase). In terms of the product packaging, I preferred the Combination/Oily tube over that of the Normal/Combination. The latter just reminded me of something I would’ve used when I was fifteen, which put me off only slightly.
Product was actually surprisingly lovely. I say ‘surprisingly’ only because I was expecting a heavy, greasy product that I would immediately want to wash off (which I get with many SPF-inclusive products!). The product melted straight into the skin, which I just adore and left the surface of my skin feeling soft and supple – perfect for makeup application! I wasn’t expecting the Combination/Oily moisturiser to be quite so fluid, so it did take me by surprise, but I found that it left my skin just a touch softer and lighter than the other. The Normal/Combination moisturiser felt equally as beautiful on the skin and was just a touch heavier (but not in the bad way!), which made it easier to move from hand to face – I’m a huge “beauty clutz”, constantly losing product to my bathroom floor!
I loved the fragrance – it reminded me of a perfume I wore some years ago, which was a fun surprise. I tend to stay away from product with added fragrance, but I am learning to let go of that hesitation, as some natural ingredients just provide a beautiful, natural scent. Also, I don’t have particularly sensitive skin, so it doesn’t seem to irritate my skin whether it has it or not.
The Combination/Oily moisturiser definitely has potential to work its way into my Summer routine, but I would probably hold off until cooler weathers before I introduce the Normal/Combination variety. I don’t have oily skin, by any means, but I still feel as though the Combination/Oily version would suffice for me this Summer (especially around festival time!).

This product ticks on all the boxes in packaging, consistency and performance. It’s so lightweight and glides on effortlessly; a little goes a long way. Unlike other sunscreen moisturisers that leave your skin looking shiny, this one is quite matte and doesn’t feel like you’ve got that added weight of sunscreen on your face. The fragrance is surprisingly refreshing and is a great addition to your summer beauty routine. Love this product!

I trialled the Neutrogena Healthy Defence Daily Moisture and I found it to be OK. Not great. The packaging is simple but nice and I do like the tubes, they’re slightly different than other moisturisers. I found the Normal/Combination moisturiser was best for my skin as my skin is maturing and very dry. I didn’t like the sunblock smell, I wish moisturisers that contain SPF could find the cure for this smell. It’s fine if you’re spending the day at the beach but I don’t like smelling like sunscreen when I’m going out. The moisturiser did absorb well and wasn’t as greasy as others SPF creams but it still left my face looking slick and shiny which I also did not like. I couldn’t keep wearing the Oil/Combination moisturiser as it felt like I was applying water to my face, it was absorbed instantly and still left feeling dry.
I got my daughter, who is 14, to try the creams and she really liked them, they both suited her skin and she said she will be wearing them to school.
So I may purchase this product again but it will be for my daughter, as I didn’t find it moisturising enough for my face. I’ve always had super dry skin.
Thanx again for the opportunity to trial this as my daughter is very happy now!!!

I found the moisturiser for the normal/combination skin to be too thick to spread.. it felt like I was applying straight sunscreen, it also left me with clogged pores around my nose..I also found the fragrance to be quiet off putting.
I also tried the moisturiser for the combination/oily which I liked much more, easier to use tube but is the same packaging as a Neutrogena sunscreen which was released last year, so in a moment of haste I could see this becoming confusing in your make up bag.
I found the brochure to be very confusing also, it really doesn’t actually clearly say what the benefits of this product are.. Ok I see that A,C,E vitamins are in the product.. but unless I specfically know what the benefit of these vitamins are then they really make no sense to me.
Jennifer Garner as a representative for this product is a good choice, she is a down to earth actress to two small children so for her to use a multitasking product such as this, it makes sense.
I overalled enjoyed trialing these products.
Thank you

I was very excited when i recieved this gorgeous parcel in the mail and am thrilled that i was given the chance to trial this wonderful product. I trialled both the ‘normal/ combination skin’ and the ‘combination/oily skin’ and i was impressed with both but the ‘combination/oily skin’ was better suited to my skin type. The bottles are cute and small enough to carry in my handbag and the smell was pleasant without being too strong and overwhelming like some other creams i have tried. This product is easy to apply and is quickly absorbed, leaving my skin feeling soft and smooth. I also love the fact that it isn’t oily and doesn’t leave me with that greasy look or feel. I will definately purchase Neutrogena Healthy Defence again and i will be recommending it to all my family and friends. If you want great skin try Neutrogena because i know you too will be happy with the results. Thanks for allowing me to be in this trial, i am so glad i was chosen

I really enjoyed participating in this trial. I recieved two packages, one for normal/comination skin and one for oily/combination. As I have an oily T-Zone I opted for the oily combination. I was really impressed by the fact that it contains SPF30 which is hard to come by in moisturisers and as I have had one or two sunspots removed I find this really important. I was really impressed by the texture as it was not thick and greasy like I expected given the fact that it contains SPF30. I found it had a nice smell without being too overpowering and was easy to apply my makeup over the top without having to wait too long. It stayed on all day which is another plus. The packaging was nice and it came in a really handy size bottle. It was easy to determine the two products as the bottles were completely different. All in all I found it to be a really nice product and will be using it again myself. I have also reccommended it to some of my friends to try. I am a big fan of Nuetrogena and use a few of their other products. Thank you for giving me the chance to trial this product.

I really liked this product. I have used facial moisturisers with a sunscreen for many years now and found the Neutrogena Healthy defence one of the better ones. It goes on silky and smooth and absorbs easily. It does have a slight sunscreen scent at first which I actually quite like and there is still a slight residual sunscreen feel left on the skin for a few hours, but compared to other products it is not excessive or bothersome. For a 30plus it is very good and performs well in the sun and perfect for under makeup. I liked the bottle with tip applicator making it easy to control amount you use and a great size to fit in your handbag so you won’t be caught out in the sun without protection. The packaging is simple but classy and I would highly reccommend this product, it eliminates all the excuses of going out without a sunscreen on. Put it on every morning and throw one in your bag and you are protected.

My skin did not seem to appreciate the lotion. It seemed to be greasy, in fact after applying in the morning and heading off to the chiropractor an hour later, i stood up from the chiro table to find my moisturiser all over the paper towel supplied. I ended up stopping useage after 5 days as my skin was getting dryer and flaky. Thanks though for allowing me to test this product.
