Evolution Of The Kung Fu Tiger Wife

Until her astonishing kung fu attack on husband Rupert Murdoch’s assailant during this week’s British Parliamentary phone hacking inquiry – earning her stripes as “Tiger Wife” – Wendi Deng has been something of an enigma. Although a regular on the international social scene, she is seen but rarely heard.
Chinese-born Deng, 42, a Yale business graduate, met the News Corporation chairman in 1997 while working for one of his media arms, Hong Kong’s Star TV. He was 66, she 29. They married in New York two years later, on June 25, 1999, only weeks after his divorce from Australian-born wife Anna.
At the time many were puzzled and underwhelmed by his choice of third wife, but over the ensuing 12 years she has transformed from geek to glamazon, who now bears an uncanny resemblance to actress Lucy Liu.

Wendi kept an impassive front during the inquiry - until a comedian sprayed her husband with shaving foam. She launched from her chair to strike the attacker, then tenderly daubed the foam from Rupert's face, laughing as she whispered "I got him".

Wendi is a regular on the international social scene; here at a film premiere with Nicole Kidman this month and at a Washington gala earlier this year
Gone is the dorky chopped crop, replaced by flowing waves; her whippet slim, statuesque (6 foot) frame make her the ideal couture clotheshorse. She also looks younger than when she married – life as wife of a billionaire tycoon clearly suits her.
But her Parliamentary performance has propelled Wendi Deng Murdoch from Trophy to Tiger Wife; one who’s happy to coddle her man and to stay in the background most of the time but will show her claws in defence of her 80-year-old husband and all he holds dear.
Leading British body language expert Judi James has called “the slap’” Mrs Murdoch’s “Pippa Middleton moment”.
She wrote: “Her spontaneous and aggressive defence, launching herself out of her chair to slap her husband’s attacker clearly shows she is someone who likes to get stuck in.
“Even when security guards intervened, Wendi was still on the attack; she was like a rottweiler.
“This is Wendi’s Pippa Middleton moment – where she upstages the father and son double act. What’s even more astonishing is that she managed to still look elegant as she attacked – a true Amazonian, powerful woman.”
