QUESTION: I’m getting married in spring and am told winter is the best time to treat pigmentation. I have a lot of brown spots, redness and some lines on my chest from sun damage and want to have a nice, smooth decolletage for my strapless wedding dress. What treatments are available and how long to they take to work?

ANSWER: I would recommend Mixto (microfractional CO2) laser at least 3 months prior to your wedding so there is time for all the redness to settle and new collagen to be laid down, giving you the best cosmetic appearence on the big day. A more aggressive treatment should be done 6 months prior to wedding.

If you have only mild wrinkling and pigmentation then a “Buff and Shine” Mixto laser treatment can help achieve that using a single pass of low-energy Mixto laser.

If tightening is needed, we often combine a radiofrequency treatment  called Pelleve – featured as “face ironing” on A Current Affair filmed recently at our clinic – which will not only iron out the fine lines on the chest but also give a slight non-surgical breast lift.

One or 2 treatments are sufficient and they can be spaced 2-3 months apart.  Mixto laser costs between $1500-$2500 plus GST on the decolletage depending on the number of passes used and the area of the chest to be treated.

Although not targeting haemoglobulin in red blood cells, Mixto laser vaporises columns of skin which goes down about 300um. This in turn vapourises age spots, freckles, acne scars and some of the superficial capillaries.

The main diffence between Mixto laser and treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is that it forces
your skin to renew its collagen. It also tightens and remove pre-cancerous skin lesions all in 1-2 treatments.

The treated area will appear red as if you had a bad sunburn appearence the next day. There will be microscopic scabs which take about 1 week to be replaced by brand new columns of new collagen.

After that , you will see and  feel the new baby smooth skin on your decolletage and the background redness will fade over 2-4 weeks. Optimum results are seen 6 months after the treatment.
