Healthy Halloween

We know what you’re thinking, “healthy Halloween, that’s an oxymoron!” And usually we would agree with you, but we’ve tracked down some tips to help you enjoy the annual sugar rush without completely regretting it the next day.
LOLLY-PALOOZA
No matter how we try to sugar coat it, pun intended, there is no avoiding the fact that Halloween is all about the lollies! You’re going to eat them and you’re going to over-indulge. Don’t beat yourself up about it because it is inevitable. You can try and save yourself, and the kids who come knocking, by offering low-sugar lollies. Yes, they do exist! Let’s face it no child (or adult) is going to ask to see the nutritional content of the lollies they’re being given.
IT’S OK TO BE THAT HEALTHY NEIGHBOUR
You might be surprised how children take to healthier snacks if they’re presented alongside sugar-dipped sugar. Individual packets of mixed nuts offer a change up to normal Halloween snacks and a slightly salty flavour might be what they’re after. Mum and dad will probably be praising your name when they see their little bundle of joy has picked up something that won’t have them bouncing off the walls all weekend.

HYDRATION NATION
If you’re hosting a party, or if you’re expecting trick or treaters, have bottles of water on ice ready to go. To ‘ghoul’ it up you could put red food colouring in the iced water. If you’re heading to a party make sure you do keep up your fluids (and not just the alcoholic type!). For ever glass of liquor you consume you should add another glass of water to you recommended daily 1.8 litres. This might this fill you up, and perhaps make you less likely to drink another glass of blood-curdling bubbles. Always remember, Drink responsibly. Consuming water while you’re having alcohol helps keep you hydrated and may soften the impact of your hangover.
YY Tip: If your neighbourhood is one with kids, make sure you have some lollies on hand. Halloween might not be the hoopla it is in the US, but you don’t want to disappoint so always be prepared. Always offer wrapped goods, these might be lollies, or muesli bars or even water bottles. (All that trick or treating can be hard work).
