She’s had an up and down year, our Madonna. Or, rather, her cheeks. At 52 she’s looking sleek and taut, but at various times over the past 12 months her cheeks have looked for all the world like they’ve been stuffed with pillows (see next image). Speculation is rife that the erstwhile Material Girl has had either surgical cheek implants, or non-surgical mid-face revolumisation with dermal fillers, both of which procedures cause initial swelling. “Madonna has a very rejuvenated look for a woman in her early 50s,” says Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Robert Drielsma. “I think a full makeover – with neck and lower facelift, lower and upper eyelid lift and brow lift – has been done, possibly as well as laser resurfacing of her skin.” (Continued next page).

Maintenance Botox is also likely.” Whatever she was doing in July, shortly before her 52nd birthday, it sure looked sore! But the gain has evidently been worth the pain: “In my opinion,” adds Sydney cosmetic surgeon Dr Colin Moore, “Madonna looks better now than in her younger photo (see next image).”

But something happened after she became Mrs Nicholas Sarkozy and France’s First Lady. Earlier this year, rumours abounded that Carla and her husband were both having affairs. Her first public appearance after the scandal broke revealed a bizarre new look. Debate raged whether the puffiness was the result of stress and sleep-deprivation, or an emergency feelgood fix from the cosmetic physician that backfired.

The former Vegas and Twin Peaks star fought a well documented battle with anorexia in the late 90s-early Noughties, her thinness brought into even sharper relief by investing in a pair of hugely inflated lips (see next image). Lara recently attended a screening in Santa Monica of her 1992 film, Where the Day Takes You looking like a completely different person! Although her body was extremly slim, Lara’s face was strangely puffy (possibly a legacy of her eating disorder, experts say) and her lips even larger. Time to put down the needle …

The 30-year-old Brazilian-born, Texan “model’s” previous claim to fame was having the world’s largest breasts, a staggering 38KKK for her 160cm frame. But in July the mum of two’s fame took a tragic twist when she fought a staph infection of her breasts – believed to be the so-called “super bug” MRSA, which is resistant to most antibiotics – which not only threatened them but her life. A year previously, already a 34FFF after eight surgeries, Sheyla travelled to Brazil to have her monumental mammaries further inflated to a 38KKK, when doctors in Texas refused to perform any more work (they baulked at her wanting to top up the existing 1.9 litres of silicone in her chest). Sheyla recovered but had her implants removed in September. Her official website promises she “will be back in December, bigger, better and sexier than ever before. Watch this space :-).” It’s December and we’re still waiting …

Former French TV heartthrobs the Bogdanoff twins, Igor and Grichka, stunned fellow partygoers at the Cannes Film Festival this year with their alarmingly alien features. In the 1980s, the-then boyishly handsome pair (see next image), now 60, hosted popular prime time series on science and science fiction and appear to have taken the subject matter as inspiration for their surgeries. After multiple procedures believed to include chin and cheek implants, as well as overdosing on the Botox and fillers, the Bogdanoffs are totally unrecognisable from their former selves.

The starlet notoriously submitted to 10 cosmetic surgery procedures in one day last year, including a chin reduction, a breast enlargement and nose job, to morph into a Barbie factory second cum Hugh Hefner girlfriend clone. Heidi, whose main claim to fame prior to her surgical reinvention was her role on faux reality show The Hills, now regrets the procedures and blames her late surgeon Dr Frank Ryan (he died in a car accident in August). In an emotional interview on US TV, the 24-year-old claimed she wasn’t warned about the dangers of cosmetic surgery, feels “like a prisoner” in her body and sometimes wishes she “could go back to the original Heidi”. Before her own awakening, US plastic surgeon Dr Anthony Youn warned that the actress “obviously has major self-image problems, which need the care of a psychiatrist, not a plastic surgeon. She appears to be a candidate for Body Dysmorphic Disorder, a psychiatric condition where the person sees their body in a completely unrealistic way. In an interview this week with US Life & Style magazine, Heidi showcases the resultant scars from each procedure, including that from her chin augmentation (left). “Heidi Montag was seeking perfection when she famously underwent 10 plastic surgery procedures in November 2009,” says a press release from the magazine. “Now a year later, Heidi reveals her operation-room battle wounds for the first time. `Parts of my body definitely look worse than they did pre-surgery’, she told [the magazine] at a photo shoot on December 2. `This is not what I signed up for’ “The former Hills star reveals a series of unsightly scars, red inflammation and uneven body parts including: a 2-inch-long raised blemish under her chin from her chin reduction, two caterpillar-size bald spots along her hairline from a brow lift, a horrifying jagged line behind her ears from having her ears pinned back, lumpy legs and four spots left on her lower back and below the buttocks from botched liposuction, a bright-red mark inside her right nostril, uneven boobs, a stretched mark on her chest and deep scars around her nipples from a second boob job. “Says Heidi:`The big dark mark from my chin reduction is probably the most noticeable. But the absolute worst is on my breasts, and the scariest is below my butt cheek.People have fewer scars from car accidents than I have on my body. I would love to not be “plastic girl” or whatever they call me. Surgery ruined my career and my personal life and just brought a lot of negativity into my world. I wish I could jump into a time machine and take it all back. Instead, I’m always going to feel like Edward Scissorhands’.”

Former Wimbledon champ and tennis great Boris Becker has, refreshingly, admitted to having gone under the knife to restore a more youthful appearance. He recently told the British TV show Daybreak: “I turned 43 [on November 22] and winning Wimbledon was 25 years ago – I do feel very much like I’m 43 now! I had a facelift recently and I coloured my hair …” US plastic surgeon Dr Anthony Youn, who also runs a celebrity plastic surgery website, comments: “[Boris] looks naturally youthful. His plastic surgeon appears to have done a nice job.”

All brides are beautiful, they say, but Chelsea – daughter of former Prez Bill Clinton and current US Secretary of State Hilary – looked particularly radiant on her wedding day this year. The secret may have been in her smile, which appeared radically different from her previous gummy grin (see next image). Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Michael Miroshnik suggests Chelsea may have had a surgical lip repositioning procedure, which involves weakening the lip elevating muscles and also removing excess gingival tissue (gum). Too much gum on show is generally perceived as a less attractive feature,” he says. “The smile starts to look a little squarish, the mouth too big and the upper lip too short in affected individuals. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic in surgeon’s rooms. All incisions are hidden inside the mouth so there are no visible scars.”

The former Days Of Our Lives and Melrose Place TV star underwent surgery in August to fillet the trout in her pout she inadvertently acquired more than 20 years ago. A youthful whim at 25 to emulate Barbara Hershey’s pillow lips in the Bette Midler movie Beaches initially reaped thrilling results. “Plump and beautiful,” as Lisa has said. But it was the late 80s, when injectable dermal fillers were in their genesis, and Lisa’s upper lip was augmented with silicone. Eventually, the silicone seeped and hardened, forming scar tissue and turning her upper lip into a caricature. Swollen larger than her lower one, it distorted the natural symmetry and made her mouth the magnetic focal point of her face (physically, and of considerable ridicule for many years – see next image). Lisa’s surgeon recontoured and reduced the volume by about 30 per cent and she is delighted with the result.

Hollywood’s most famous cougar has admitted to having had “work” – just not on her face. The actress-producer is reported to have spent as much as $500,000 on a total body overhaul, including liposcultping and skin-tightening/cellulite reducing treatments. But Demi consistently denies she’s had facial plastic surgery despite, at 48, looking younger than she did 20 years ago (see next image). “I’d never judge those who have had [plastic surgery],” she said in an interview last year, “but I don’t like the idea of having an operation to hold up the ageing process. The scalpel won’t make you happy. For now I prefer to be a beautiful woman of my age than desperately try to look 30.” However, Demi may not be averse to having Botox and dermal fillers (which, after all, are not surgery!). “Given that she she has only minor wrinkling around her eyes and little movement of her forehead during this smiling shot, it is likely that Demi is having Botulinum toxin (Botox) injected into these areas,” says Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Paul Gerarchi. “In addition, Demi’s eyebrows appear not to have dropped one bit since 1992 (and the outer part of her eyebrow appears as though its actually a little higher than 18 years ago),” adds Dr Gerarchi. “Slight elevation of the eyebrows can be achieved with botulinum toxin injections or, alternatively, a lateral ‘temporal’ browlift (a procedure that can be performed under a local anaestheic) would give a similar result. Most people lose volume in their cheeks with age, but Demi’s cheeks appear more voluminous than they did 18 years ago. It is most likely that this has been achieved with injectable fillers. Alternatively, micro-droplet fat injections could be used to achieve the same result. If you look closely at the area below Demi’s eyes, you will notice that there are no signs of the hollowing under the eyes that occurs with age (nasojugal grooves). This area is also likely to have been filled with cosmetic fillers. You can also notice the definite lower eyelid to cheek demarkation that can be seen in the 1992 photo is no longer present in the 2010 photo. This appearance is also consistent with fillers having been injected beneath Demi’s eyes. Also, although Demi has a little crepiness of the skin under her eyes, this is relatively little for a woman of her age. I would sugest that she has had her lower eyelid skin resurfaced either with laser or with a chemical peel.” What she’s (not) doing, Demi is doing it well! A winner.

Did the look contribute to the King of Spin’s newly fresh-faced appearance … Cupid’s arrow, or something more like a needle? Eyebrows were raised (including his own, it seemed) when he unveiled a rejuvenated visage in August, prompting speculation of plastic surgery (a brow, even facelift) or perhaps Botox. Shane Tweeted in response that he’d had nothing done; his distinctly different look was due to hard training and losing 5kg, as well as having his teeth whitened. When news broke this month of his romance with British beauty Liz Hurley (and then as quickly broke down amid a new “sexting” scandal), all eyes were back on his, well, eyes. There’s no denying that, compared with two years ago (see next image), they look tighter. His forehead is also less lined, his complexion less weathered and jawline considerably less jowly. “Shane is certainly looking fresher,” says cosmetic physician Dr Joseph Hkiek, of All Saints Cosmedical Clinics in Sydney. “His skin is much brighter and I think he might have had laser skin rejuvenation or microhydrabrasion. He has had some man-scaping. His eyebrows have been shaped to give him a brow lift. He might have had some Botox to contribute to the lift.”

In a refreshing twist as we come to the end of 2010, Pamela Anderson has announced she is swearing off plastic surgery. Arguably one of the celebrities most closely associated with the topic (reportedly having undergone several breast implant surgeries, and speculation of other procedures), the 43-year-old actress and Playboy centrefold has decided she’s reached her quota. “I’m not against plastic surgery,” several sources have quoted her as saying. “What I’ve had done will stay with me and that’s fine, but I don’t want anything else. I’ll do facials, but I don’t want to go down the scary route and have knives plunged into me. I don’t mind ageing. I’ve never been a classical beauty. I don’t want to chase youth. Anyway, I find it chases me.”
