Can Botox fix my jaw pain?

Posted: Thursday 9 December 2010 01:22pm

QUESTION:
I have jaw problems that cause me severe pain and I have heard that Botox helps. What would you recommend?

ANSWER:
Botox cannot be legally administered by dentists, but its use in the treatment of jaw pain has become increasingly prevalent in dental research articles. Whilst it can be used for specific instances of jaw muscle hyperactivity, jaw joint pain is comprised of complex interactions between the muscles of the jaw, face and neck, jaw joints and teeth. It would be wise to have the actual cause of the jaw pain diagnosed by a dentist and appropriate course taken, which may involve a number of treatments, including occlusal splint (grinding guard) therapy, analgesics, orthodontics and physiotherapy.
