How to find the right surgeon for you

The decision to have a cosmetic surgery procedure should involve a lot of consideration and research. Equally as important is finding the right surgeon for your needs. This is my advice:

1. Do your homework. Carefully research and understand which qualifications and certifications are relevant for the procedure you want.

2.  Make a list of providers and ask for referrals for friend, or trusted physician. Alternatively, use credible referral services who legitimately practice what you seek, such as the Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.

3.  Personal preferences. Find a surgeon you feel comfortable with and who you can establish a trusting relationship, to share the emotional ups and downs that come with the elective surgery.

4.  Consider the staff. I recommend looking for a surgeon with service-minded staff who have excellent listening skills.  You need to know who else may be involved in your treatment and a surgeon and his staff should openly discuss concerns relating to consultation, surgery and aftercare.

5.  Surrounds. The surgeon must have hospital privileges at a local accredited hospital, such as Bondi Junction Private Hospital where I operate, in order to perform the specific surgical procedure you are considering.  This applies for any treatment greater than a local (topical) anesthetic.

6.  Experience. Make sure your surgeon has performed the procedure you are interested in many times and can provide before and after recent photographs of actual patients.

7.  Be sure that you would trust your life and your beauty to the surgeon that you choose.

8.  Complications. These are a potential consequence of any surgical procedure and you should be able to discuss those specific to your procedure freely with your chosen surgeon.  And you must have confidence that your surgeon can treat your complications and not abandon you if these occur.
