How you wear your hair sends out signals about who you are, how you want to be seen and how approachable you are. Unfortunately you might be sending out the wrong ones and don’t know it!
Stylist to the stars Dario Cotroneo, of DARIO salon in Darlinghurst, Sydney, explains the psychology of hair and how to ensure our tresses communicate what we’re really trying to say.
He also analyses star turns, from Jennifer Aniston‘s trademark tresses to princess-in-waiting Kate Middleton‘s timeless “Mayfair Blowout” in our photo gallery. Click here for Celebrity Hair Confidential.
How does a woman choose a style that appropriately reflects her face shape, age, personality, lifestyle – indeed, how she wants to be seen?
Hair is so important as it is the frame around a woman’s shopfront – namely her face! Always consider that the outside image of a person represents how they are feeling on the inside. Hair is no exception.
For example, if you are a CEO or team leader, then straight, structured hair will give you the appearance of authority, but straight hair can also make the wearer appear less approachable than a woman sporting curls or waves. Unfortunately, straight hair also draws attention to the lines on your face, as it is a style based on minimalism, whereas curly or wavy hair draws attention around the face rather than directly to the face.
Generally for men, wavy or curly hair on a woman is an invitation to talk to her while straight hair can often have a stand-off effect. For this reason, have a think about what you want to communicate about yourself and go for it with confidence, and that will make you look sexier and desirable. What is most attractive to men is a woman feeling great about herself.

How do you find a hairstyle to suit you?
When you think fashion, most of us know that a long jacket will make you look thinner, and a short jacket will make you look broader – the same principals apply to hair.
If you have a long face, look for a hairstyle that will give you more width not height. If you have a broad face, choose one that will give you height and movement.
What are the “rules” these days for how a woman should wear her hair as she gets older?
To me, success from a client session is to have her esteem lifted. This is often possible due to re-balancing the face by bringing out her assets and hiding her liabilities. The result is she leaves feeling empowered. The client and I are both in harmony and know this is the way forward for her, so she walks out feeling sexy and alive.
I always advise clients to move with the ageing process, and as the face ages, the hair has to keep evolving also. If it doesn’t, the face will look old and the hair will stay young, which isn’t a great look. As a woman ages, she needs more height in her hair to lift the face in the right areas. My view is a woman in control of her image is an empowered woman.
It is not necessary for all women to go shorter as they age. Short hair disconnects your head from you body so you have to be very comfortable with your body before taking the plunge. Haircuts have to keep the face in balance and I always make sure that my client understands the solution behind the length chosen before committing. In saying that, I find that women with longer hair are generally more sensual, however in some cases it can be a sign of a person trying to cling onto their youth.
