Get The Whites Back In Your Eyes!

When the seclera (eye whites) becomes dull or yellowish t’s usually related to liver function and can make us look older and even unhealthy.  If the yellowness is pronounced, a trip to the doctor could be in order as it may indicate a health condition that requires further investigation and treatment.

However, if you know you’ve been overdoing things ,  it’s a yellow flag signalling that you need to give your body a break. To help things along, here are some simple lifestyle tips to get the whites back in your eyes:

  • Drink more water to help flush out toxins.
  • Rest and sleep more.
  • Get moving! Even a 30 minute walk a day will get the blood pumping, the juices flowing and speed the elimination of toxins.
  • Cut back on – preferably cut out – cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine drinks, junk food and all the usual suspects that burden your liver and bloodstream.
  • The herb eyebright is a traditional remedy for … making the eyes brighter and clearer. Other herbs such as St Marys Thistle, dandelion and globe artichoke are known to be good liver supports.
  • Bilberry tablets are said to promote better blood circulation in the eyes but need to be taken regularly for several weeks before a difference is seen. However, it’s important to note that herbal remedies can have contraindications for some people and should not be taken randomly. Seek the advice of a qualified practitioner first and always check with your doctor if you are taking other medications or have existing health problems.
  • If redness is the problem, you can temporarily achieve bright white eyes by using eye drops containing a vascular constrictor (which constricts all of the blood vessels in your eyes making them instantly sparkling white). But be warned: these drops are not suitable while wearing contact lenses and can only be used very occasionally (going to a party or disguising a hangover for example). They can be bought at chemists but better sure than sorry – check with an optometrist first.
  • There is an old technique some models use before a photo shoot: put a single drop (very important) of lemon juice into an eye bath, place over eye and blink a few times. Gently pat dry around your eye – in five minutes you’re all white. But given that lemon juice is acidic and the eyeball is fragile, this is not recommended on a regular basis.
  • Another trick is using blue-based and/or white eyeliner, versus plain old black. Either will make the eye much whiter.
