For women with an extremely saggy or overly large bust, whether bestowed by nature, motherhood or ageing, surgical breast lifts and reductions are likely their best option.
But for lesser cup sizes and stages of sag, a leading cosmetic laser surgeon has happened on an unorthodox technique to lift breasts by up to 30 per cent, without surgery.
When consulted by a patient suffering red “stripes” on her chest from a botched beauty salon anti-ageing light therapy, Dr Jack Ting suggested a Fraxel Re: pair laser treatment to get rid of the red marks while also treating her decolletage for the effects of sun damage and ageing.
Within weeks of having her first treatment, not only were the “stripes” gone but the patient and Dr Ting, of the Laser Cosmetic Day Procedure Centre in Coogee, Sydney, noted a significant improvement in the quality of her skin as well as a lift and tightening of her bustline (pictured right).
“I’m a perfectionist and I knew we could get better results, so I did another Fraxel re:pair. She eventually achieved a 30 per cent list of the breasts and even better skin quality.”
A recent patient in her 50s underwent the procedure with similar results.
Dr Ting – who has been performing laser surgery for more than 22 years – concedes it is not a standard use of Fraxel and that it should only been attempted by extremely experienced practitioners.
For women with issues at the other end of the breast spectrum, there are a number of ways to increase your cup size without surgery.
A new procedure known by doctors as the “boob jab” means you can enlarge, lift or balance the size your breasts with the injection of a specialised dermal filler.
“It’s a fantastic procedure,” says Sydney cosmetic surgeon, Dr Anoop Rastogi. “The biggest limitation with it is that it lasts for about 18 months only.”
Using a dermal filler called Macrolane, which is composed of hyaluronic acid – Jennifer Aniston was reputed to have used when she suddenly sported a fuller bust last year – the gel-like substance is injected mainly behind the breast.
“The procedure is wonderful for women who hate the idea of surgery or of having a foreign body such as implants in their breasts,” says Dr Rastogi.
However it should not be given to women under 18, those with breasts that are too saggy or who want a very large cup size. The procedure is yet to have blanket approval in Australia, however Dr Rastogi has already had permission to treat a number of patients in the last two years and a big waiting list.
Priced from $5,500 to $6,000, the boob jab is expensive but “some women would rather forsake other material items to be able to have beautifully shaped breasts,” says Dr Rastogi.
For those who want bigger breasts without any form of surgical or cosmedical intervention, the Brava breast pump system could be an option with users achieving an average increase of one cup size, and long-lasting results.
The process is not pretty or easy, though. Users must wear a large plastic dome over each breast, encased in a sports bra, for a minimum 10 hours a day for 10 weeks (most wear the device at night, while sleeping on their back) for growth to be achieved. When the dome is applied over the breast it forms a seal, and then a mechanical pump known as the Smart Box removes air from inside the domes.
When such tension is exerted on the breast tissue for at least 10 hours a day the result is the gradual production of new breast tissue. In seven weeks true tissue growth will be noted.
The system is suitable for healthy women 18 and over and has been used successfully by women in their 60s. Indeed, mature women are quicker to respond.
A kit costs $1,995 with domes available in eight sizes. If you outgrow the domes, new ones cost $595 a set. The system can be ordered online at www.mybrava.com.au
