Out Damned Brown Spots!

Have you noticed a discoloured spot on your face or hands and weren’t quite sure what you were dealing with? Well, those dark spots on your skin are called just that, ‘dark spots,’ or ‘age spots’ and they are caused by excessive sun exposure as well as ageing.
Dark spots arise when skin is frequently exposed to both UVA and UVB light. When overexposed to the sun, cells become damaged, which can increase melanin production amd cause pigmentation spots to form on the skin.
“Fine lines and wrinkles are not the first sign of ageing, irregular pigmentation is,” says Dr Sherry Hsuing, Kiehl’s Consulting Dermatologist. Nowadays there are many whitening products on the market which work to diminish the appearance of pigmentation, and prevent the surfacing of dark spots. Most of these products will address the face as a whole, but the best way to target problem spots directly is with a whitening spot treatment.
Most whitening spot treatments will work in three ways: by reducing the appearance of spots; detecting melanin below the skin’s surface and treating them before spots can appear; and inhibiting melanin formation.
Apply a whitening spot treatment topically to affected areas, including the back of your hands and décolletage each night.

When I was young, we all spent ages in the sun getting tans. Covered in freckles and wanting perfect skin, we damaged our skin by hoping a dark tan would hide them. Now after many skin cancer treatments I have decided that a few freckles and dark spots are not so bad. How lucky the younger girls are, that they can get beautiful creams and makeup to protect their skin. Many friends have asked me about skin blemishes and I always tell them…. If you are worried…get it checked. Use a good sun block every day.
