5 Anti-Ageing Foundation Tricks

Foundation: this one product can add years to your look if applied incorrectly. Try these foundation tricks for a younger-looking complexion.
Trick #1: Choose a hydrating formula.
A hydrating foundation is key to looking youthful because it addresses your fine lines, sagging skin and uneven skin tone all at the same time. Bobbi Brown recommends a creamy formula: “A cream foundation is your best bet because it will glide over, rather than settle into facial lines. Stay away from a heavy foundation, as it will simply accumulate in your lines and make them more noticeable.”
Our product picks: Bobbi Brown Moisture Rich Foundation SPF 15, $75; Dr. LeWinn’s Synergise Tinted Moisturiser SPF 30+, $39.95
Trick #2: Get the colour tone right.
“Choosing the right foundation shade is the most important tip for women at any age,” says Gucci Westman, Revlon Global Artistic Director. “You can really age yourself if you aren’t wearing the right foundation. I always like to have two or three different shades and mix them together.”
To find your foundation shade, test three different shades that you think most closely match. The one that disappears is the one for you. Apply under your jawline when testing as it is a more accurate indication of your skintone, unlike your hand which is often a darker shade. Check your foundation colour outdoors or under a bright light where you’ll be able to see if it gives you a natural coverage. Remember that your complexion may have changed over the years, so you may need to switch shades.
Remember that as the season change, your foundation shade will too. Always have at least two shades on hand to take you from winter to summer and everything in between by mixing them for a custom colour.
Our product picks: Revlon Beyond Natural Skin Matching Makeup, $29.95 – when applied it adjusts to your skintone for the perfect colour match; Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Foundation, $23.50 – available in 12 shades so you’re sure to find the right shade.
Trick #3: Find a flattering finish.
Wearing a foundation that’s dulling, or orange-toned, will add years. “Wear a foundation that has a luminous versus too matte finish. It will soften any fine lines on the skin,” advises Annette Falso, Revlon Senior Vice President Product Development. An illuminating foundation with light reflecting particles will give skin an airbrushed look.
Our product picks: Clinique Dewy Smooth Anti-Aging Makeup SPF15, $50; Rimmel London Recover Illuminating Anti-Fatigue Foundation, $18.95
Trick #4: Fight ageing while getting flawless coverage.
“Today, there’s a very fine line (no pun intended!) between foundation and skincare,” explains Bobbi Brown. “Many foundations are now formulated with the same anti-ageing ingredients that you find in moisturisers. Try a foundation that has vitamin A, which will help skin look firmer, and vitamins C and E, which will protect skin from damaging free radicals.”
Our product picks: Bobbi Brown Luminous Foundation, $80; Revlon Age Defying with DNA Advantage SPF 20 Cream Makeup, $39.95; Olay Total Effects Touch of Foundation, $32.95; Avon Anew Age Transforming Foundation, $49.99
Trick #5: Apply only where you need it.
A heavy application of foundation is not the way to hide fine lines and wrinkles. In fact, using too much product will only draw further attention to your imperfections as the product sinks deep into any lines. Pat a small amount into the areas that need to be evened out (usually around the nose, under the eyes, on the chin, and any dark spots of blemishes) using a makeup sponge, your fingertip or a foundation brush. Blend in an upward direction for a natural effect. Start with just a little foundation and build to your desired coverage.
Our product picks: The Body Shop Foundation Brush, $24.95; True Solutions True All Day Moisture SPF 30+ Tinted, $60 – a tinted moisturiser is an easy way to ensure you don’t overload your product and you’ll get a subtle touch of colour and coverage.

For us ladies on the wrong side of forty but are trying to disguise the fact, the best advise I have been given is to stick with a product with SPF always- summer and winter. I have recently started using the Revlon Age defying foundation and finds it gives me great coverage and doesn’t sit in my fine lnes( sounds much nicer than wrinkles).

One of the best makeups I have found is the Revlon Age Defying DNA Advantage, I used the same foundation for years but realised that my skin was not the same as 10 years ago. DNA feels so light and is easy to use. So if you have been in the same rutt – change! I have got some very nice comments about looking younger – got to love that!

a good article, but, each tip means at least 3 different choices.. isnt there one single or maybe even two foundations that will incorporate these 5 things? noone can have 5 diffreent foundations on to get all these benefits at the same time!! If one had to be picked as the bestfor anti ageing properties , which would it be, ..
